Journey With Me has changed the lives of many - the leaders, the older adults enrolled in the workshop and the college interns alike.
We are all story tellers. We like to be entertained, but we need to be involved in productive work. Through storytelling, seniors make better sense of their lives and come to terms with the way they have lived. They continue to set goals for themselves, finding new meaning in life and overcoming physical disability. They feel more a part of the community in which they live and they get to know their neighbors on a more intellectual level.
Leaders find themselves a part of something magical and important as they guide the students through the lessons and help them achieve their goals. To see the students' confidence and skills grow is rewarding. In addition, there is much to be learned from our older generation. As the late 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney once said, "I've learned that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person."
College students provide the necessary mechanical skills to any older adult who is physically limited. In doing so the student’s interaction with the older generations enables them to achieve a broader understanding of life’s challenges and possibilities. Additionally, the students are able to appreciate the specific concerns of our burgeoning older adult population. They become an important resource for their community.
